How the RMV downtime will impact auto quoting

By Charlie Walsh on March 14th, 2018

All RMV services and system access will be down from 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 22 through 8:00 a.m. Monday, March 26, as the RMV transitions to the new ATLAS system. How will this impact quoting auto policies in WinRater / SinglePoint?

By now, you likely received messages from the Registry of Motor Vehicles and MAIA that all RMV services and system access – including RMV services locations, motor vehicle inspections, and online services – will be unavailable from: 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 22 until 8:00 a.m. Monday, March 26th.

The RMV will use this time to transition to its new online computer system, ATLAS.

If agents, carriers, and vendors like Boston Software do not have access to validated RMV data, it will make it difficult to get an accurate Auto quote.  It should make for an interesting couple of days.

As far as WinRater/SinglePoint goes, agents can still hand-enter data in the driver and vehicles screens and request a quote from Auto carriers.  We reached out to carriers to see how they will handle the Real-Time quote requests during these few days.  Carriers will do one of these following:

  • Some carriers will close down their MA Auto processing and quoting systems.  Agents will not be able to quote at all for these carriers during this down period.
  • Some carriers will handle this down period just as they do when the RMV goes down periodically.  That is, the carrier will accept the data entered by agents and quote the policy with a message stating that the RMV is down and thus the issued policy premium will likely change.  Once the RMV system is back up, these carriers will confirm all the risk information with the RMV and adjust the premium accordingly.
  • Some carriers are still deciding what to do.  These carriers will inform their agents once they determine exactly how they are handling this down period.

We expect RMV access to be available on Monday March 26 and that you will be able to resume using WinRater/SinglePoint as you did before the change. You won’t have to do anything differently.

As always, we will do our best to stay on top of this situation and let you know if/when anything changes.
